Dr. Avi Wallerstein co-founded LASIK MD along with Dr. Mark Cohen. He is one of its two national medical directors. As director of refractive surgery at McGill University and the Royal Victoria Hospital, Dr. Wallerstein teaches ophthalmologists-in-training and performs surgeries. Dr. Wallerstein is also assistant professor of ophthalmology at McGill.
Educational Background
Dr. Wallerstein completed his medical degree at Queen’s University in Kingston, and then specialized in ophthalmology at McGill University in Montreal. He then completed his post-doctoral fellowship training in cornea and laser refractive surgery at North Shore University Hospital and New York University in New York. Very few surgeons in Quebec have this specialized background.

Dr. Wallerstein has worked in laser vision correction clinics throughout North America, Europe and Asia. In Canada, Dr. Wallerstein has worked for laser vision correction clinics such as the Focus Eye Center in Ottawa, Montreal’s Ophthalmolaser Clinic, and Lasik Vision Corporation, where he acted as the international medical director and co-chairman of the company’s medical advisory committee. Dr. Wallerstein is one of 14 surgeons in North America who is a certified C-LASIK instructor, allowing him to teach the LASIK procedure to other surgeons. Dr Wallerstein is also credited with developing a laser eye surgery teaching curriculum for ophthalmology students. Throughout his career; Dr. Wallerstein has played an important role in the development of new technologies. Dr. Wallerstein leverages his extensive refractive experience and proficiency using Bausch & Lomb’s Technolas 217 laser and Hansatome Keratome in his role as an investigator for new technologies for Bausch & Lomb. Early in his career, Dr Wallerstein gained expertise performing what became the standard vertical flap LASIK technique for myopia. Dr. Wallerstein has also performed thousands of advanced custom wavefront procedures.

Dr. Wallerstein (along with Dr. Mark Cohen) was awarded the Ernst & Young 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the professional/financial services category for Quebec. An accomplished speaker, Dr. Wallerstein has given a number of talks to the scientific community. Dr. Dwight Silvera completed his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo, graduating on the dean’s list. After completing his medical degree at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Dr. Silvera did his specialization in ophthalmology at Queen’s University in Kingston, where he served as chief resident. Following this, he earned a post-doctoral fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at the University of Iowa.
Refractive Experience
Dr. Silvera has diverse experience performing laser surgery, and is proficient in several types of state-of-the-art lasers, including the VISX Star S4, Bausch & Lomb Z100, Allegretto Wavelight, and is certified for the IntraLase laser. He was one of the first surgeons to perform an IntraLase-enabled keratoplasty (cornea transplant) in Iowa. During his fellowship at the University of Iowa, Dr. Silvera taught ophthalmology to residents and medical students. As a Corneal Specialist, Dr. Silvera also offers a new treatment for Keratoconus patients called corneal cross-linking.

Dr. Eric Tam completed his medical degree and residency in ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. Since 2003, he has run a successful private practice in Brampton, where he focuses on anterior segment, and cataract and refractive surgery. In addition, Dr. Tam is an active attending surgeon at William Osler Health Centre in Brampton, and Mount Sinai Hospital and Kensington Eye Institute in Toronto.

Dr. Kenman Gan was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He completed his medical degree at the University of Alberta. This was followed by five years of ophthalmic surgical training at the University of Alberta. While working at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, he served as the chief resident in ophthalmology.

Dr. Gan has performed thousands of ophthalmic procedures. He has performed cataract surgeries and other laser eye surgeries in several public institutions, including the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Royal Jubilee Hospital. He has received additional training specializing in laser refractive surgery from some of North America's most experienced laser refractive surgeons. Dr. Keon Nia graduated from University and Medical school at the University of Toronto amongst the top of his class and was the recipient of numerous scholarships. Dr. Mark Cohen co-founded LASIK MD along with Dr. Avi Wallerstein. He is the president of LASIK MD, and one of its two national medical directors. As a cornea and laser vision correction specialist, Dr. Cohen is responsible for teaching laser eye surgery to ophthalmology residents from the University of Sherbrooke, University of Montreal and McGill University.
Educational Background
Dr. Cohen completed his medical degree (MD, CM) and specialization in ophthalmology (FRCSC) at the internationally renowned McGill University. While at McGill, Dr. Cohen was awarded the prestigious Holmes’ gold medal, given to the graduate of the faculty of medicine with highest academic standing upon completion of four years of medical school. He then completed his training with a post-doctoral fellowship in corneal transplantation surgery and laser vision correction of the cornea.

Dr. Mounir Bashour, a biomedical engineering graduate of Johns Hopkins University, completed his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal. He then specialized in ophthalmology at George Washington University in Washington D.C., after working for a year as an intern at New York Medical College in Manhattan.
Dr. Bashour is one of the world’s few ophthalmologists to have completed three post-doctoral fellowships: pediatric ophthalmology; refractive surgery (both from McGill University); and, the prestigious American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship in oculoplastics, at the University of Toronto. Dr. Bashour also completed the Royal College Clinician Investigator Program, a certificate of teaching in the biomedical sciences, and a doctorate in biomedical engineering and medical science, at the University of Toronto.

Dr. Rookaya Mather received her medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. She completed her specialization in ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving as chief resident and receiving the Jay G. Linn Award for Outstanding Resident in her senior year. Dr. Mather went on to complete her fellowship training in Corneal and External Disease at the Proctor Foundation, University of California, San Francisco.
