Avi Wallerstein

Professional Background

Dr. Avi Wallerstein co-founded LASIK MD along with Dr. Mark Cohen. He is one of its two national medical directors. As director of refractive surgery at McGill University and the Royal Victoria Hospital, Dr. Wallerstein teaches ophthalmologists-in-training and performs surgeries. Dr. Wallerstein is also assistant professor of ophthalmology at McGill.

Educational Background

Dr. Wallerstein completed his medical degree at Queen’s University in Kingston, and then specialized in ophthalmology at McGill University in Montreal. He then completed his post-doctoral fellowship training in cornea and laser refractive surgery at North Shore University Hospital and New York University in New York. Very few surgeons in Quebec have this specialized background.
Refractive Experience

Dr. Wallerstein has worked in laser vision correction clinics throughout North America, Europe and Asia. In Canada, Dr. Wallerstein has worked for laser vision correction clinics such as the Focus Eye Center in Ottawa, Montreal’s Ophthalmolaser Clinic, and Lasik Vision Corporation, where he acted as the international medical director and co-chairman of the company’s medical advisory committee. Dr. Wallerstein is one of 14 surgeons in North America who is a certified C-LASIK instructor, allowing him to teach the LASIK procedure to other surgeons. Dr Wallerstein is also credited with developing a laser eye surgery teaching curriculum for ophthalmology students. Throughout his career; Dr. Wallerstein has played an important role in the development of new technologies. Dr. Wallerstein leverages his extensive refractive experience and proficiency using Bausch & Lomb’s Technolas 217 laser and Hansatome Keratome in his role as an investigator for new technologies for Bausch & Lomb. Early in his career, Dr Wallerstein gained expertise performing what became the standard vertical flap LASIK technique for myopia. Dr. Wallerstein has also performed thousands of advanced custom wavefront procedures.

Accomplishments and Awards

Dr. Wallerstein (along with Dr. Mark Cohen) was awarded the Ernst & Young 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the professional/financial services category for Quebec. An accomplished speaker, Dr. Wallerstein has given a number of talks to the scientific community. He was awarded the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery Best Scientific Paper prize in 2003 and 2001, for research conducted on treating mixed astigmatism using the Bausch & Lomb 217 laser. Dr. Wallerstein has acted as a medical consultant in the development of laser eye surgery centers worldwide.

Dr. Dwight Silvera

Educational Background

Dr. Dwight Silvera completed his Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at the University of Waterloo, graduating on the dean’s list. After completing his medical degree at McMaster University in Hamilton, Ontario, Dr. Silvera did his specialization in ophthalmology at Queen’s University in Kingston, where he served as chief resident. Following this, he earned a post-doctoral fellowship in cornea, external disease, and refractive surgery at the University of Iowa.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Silvera has diverse experience performing laser surgery, and is proficient in several types of state-of-the-art lasers, including the VISX Star S4, Bausch & Lomb Z100, Allegretto Wavelight, and is certified for the IntraLase laser. He was one of the first surgeons to perform an IntraLase-enabled keratoplasty (cornea transplant) in Iowa. During his fellowship at the University of Iowa, Dr. Silvera taught ophthalmology to residents and medical students. As a Corneal Specialist, Dr. Silvera also offers a new treatment for Keratoconus patients called corneal cross-linking.

Dr. Silvera is board-certified in Canada with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada and certified in the United States with the American Board of Ophthalmology. He has participated in various research projects and has written articles for scientific publications, including the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. He has also given presentations at various events and major ophthalmology conferences, such as the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology and the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Dr. Silvera finished in the 99th percentile of his OKAP (Ophthalmic Knowledge Assessment Program) exam across North America and has received numerous awards in recognition of his accomplishments.

Dr. Eric Tam

Educational Background

Dr. Eric Tam completed his medical degree and residency in ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. Since 2003, he has run a successful private practice in Brampton, where he focuses on anterior segment, and cataract and refractive surgery. In addition, Dr. Tam is an active attending surgeon at William Osler Health Centre in Brampton, and Mount Sinai Hospital and Kensington Eye Institute in Toronto.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Tam has performed over 5,000 ocular procedures. Over the past five years, he has taught cataract surgery to numerous ophthalmologists-in-training, using the latest technologies, techniques and lens implants. Dr. Tam has extensive experience using a wide array of the latest refractive technologies, such as clear lens extractions, multifocal lenses and astigmatic keratotomy.

Accomplishments and Awards

Dr. Tam is a lecturer in the University of Toronto’s ophthalmology residency program. He has written articles on ophthalmology for scientific publications. He has also given presentations at major ophthalmology conferences, including for the Canadian Ophthalmological Society. Dr. Tam speaks both Mandarin and Cantonese.

Dr. John Lloyd

Educational Background

Dr. John Lloyd completed his ophthalmology residency at Long Island Jewish Medical Centre, part of the world-renowned Albert Einstein Medical College in New York. He was the chief resident in his final year, and also completed a fellowship in comprehensive ophthalmology with a focus on cataract and refractive surgery. He is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology, a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and a member of the American and Canadian Societies of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Lloyd has been performing laser vision correction surgery since 1997. Before joining LASIK MD, he worked at the Bochner Eye Institute in Toronto. Dr. Lloyd is certified in several types of excimer lasers, including the state-of-the-art Bausch & Lomb Z100. He teaches eye surgery to ophthalmology residents and gives lectures on ophthalmology to medical students at the University of Toronto. He is on staff at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre, as well as at the Kensington Eye Institute.

Dr. Lloyd regularly lectures on both anterior segment surgery and comprehensive ophthalmology. He has received teaching awards from the University of Toronto’s department of ophthalmology for his lectures on optics. Dr. Kenman Gan

Educational Background

Dr. Kenman Gan was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. He completed his medical degree at the University of Alberta. This was followed by five years of ophthalmic surgical training at the University of Alberta. While working at the Royal Alexandra Hospital, he served as the chief resident in ophthalmology.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Gan has performed thousands of ophthalmic procedures. He has performed cataract surgeries and other laser eye surgeries in several public institutions, including the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Royal Jubilee Hospital. He has received additional training specializing in laser refractive surgery from some of North America's most experienced laser refractive surgeons. Dr. Gan has diverse experience with many types of refractive surgery technologies including the Bausch and Lomb Z100 excimer laser, the Alcon Wavelight Allegretto Eye Q excimer laser, the Ziemer Crystalline femtosecond laser, and the Bausch and Lomb Hansatome microkeratome. He is experienced in LASIK and PRK procedures, including both standard and Advanced Custom Wavefront techniques.

Accomplishments and Awards

Among the numerous awards that Dr. Gan has received include the Dr. T Alistair Boyd Prize in ophthalmology, the John Proskie Memorial Scholarship in ophthalmology, and the Reg Martiniuk Ophthalmology Award.
Dr. Gan is also extensively involved with ophthalmology research. He has presented his research at national and international conferences, and has twice received the Canadian Ophthalmological Society’s Prize for Excellence in Research – 2nd place in 2009 and 1st place in 2010. He has also received research awards from Fight for Sight, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Alberta Heritage Foundation for Medical Research, and the Sigma Xi Scientific Research Society.
An avid community volunteer, Dr. Gan has been recognized with the Anne Louise Mundell Humanitarian Award, the Laurence Decore Leadership Award, and a Circle K/Kiwanis Western Canada District Leadership Award.

Dr. Keon Nia

Educational Background

Dr. Keon Nia graduated from University and Medical school at the University of Toronto amongst the top of his class and was the recipient of numerous scholarships. He held honours standing throughout all four medical years. He then specialized and completed residency in ophthalmology at the University of Toronto. During residency, he made an important contribution to the field of low vision and published his findings in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology. As a senior resident, Dr. Nia taught eye surgery to junior residents training to become ophthalmologists. Dr. Nia is certified with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Nia has performed over 10,000 ocular procedures, and has experience and expertise using the latest and most advanced excimer laser platforms. He completed his training in refractive surgery at LASIK MD with some of the top surgeons in North America, and has worked at laser eye surgery centers in Toronto, Edmonton, Calgary, and Saskatoon. He has also been involved in training other ophthalmologists on staff. In 2008, Dr. Nia had advanced custom wavefront surgery on both eyes at LASIK MD.

Dr. Nia has written extensively on ophthalmological and otolaryngological matters. He was the recipient of the University of Toronto faculty of medicine research scholarship and has presented research papers at meetings of the Canadian Ophthalmology Society and the University of Toronto’s Ophthalmology Research Day.

Dr. Mark Cohen

Professional Background

Dr. Mark Cohen co-founded LASIK MD along with Dr. Avi Wallerstein. He is the president of LASIK MD, and one of its two national medical directors. As a cornea and laser vision correction specialist, Dr. Cohen is responsible for teaching laser eye surgery to ophthalmology residents from the University of Sherbrooke, University of Montreal and McGill University.
Educational Background

Dr. Cohen completed his medical degree (MD, CM) and specialization in ophthalmology (FRCSC) at the internationally renowned McGill University. While at McGill, Dr. Cohen was awarded the prestigious Holmes’ gold medal, given to the graduate of the faculty of medicine with highest academic standing upon completion of four years of medical school. He then completed his training with a post-doctoral fellowship in corneal transplantation surgery and laser vision correction of the cornea.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Cohen has extensive experience in laser surgery using several types of lasers and microkeratomes. Dr. Cohen has over ten years of experience performing surgery with a scanning-spot laser and large flap microkeratome, now a LASIK standard used to resolve night vision problems. In 2001, Bausch & Lomb requested Dr. Cohen to assess its new "zero compression" keratome, specifically designed to allow for safer and thinner corneal flaps for LASIK surgery. Dr. Cohen has also performed thousands of advanced custom wavefront procedures. Doctor Cohen has collaborated on a number of research studies involving the Bausch & Lomb Technolas 217 laser. He has also done extensive research on improved night vision quality with newer LASIK technologies.

Accomplishments and Awards

Dr. Cohen is a certified C-LASIK instructor, one of 14 surgeons in North America with this designation to teach LASIK. He has lectured and taught the PRK and LASIK procedures to over 100 eye surgeons and ophthalmologists-in-training. He has given six international courses on beginner and advanced LASIK techniques. Dr. Cohen is co-author of the governmental Council for the Evaluation of Health Care Technology's report on LASIK and PRK. Dr. Cohen (along with Dr. Avi Wallerstein) was awarded the Ernst & Young 2008 Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the professional/financial services category for Quebec. Also in 2008, Dr. Cohen was honored to be named one of Canada’s ‘Top 40 Under 40’, in a national competition sponsored by the Globe and Mail. This award is given annually across Canada to 40 individuals who have demonstrated “vision, innovation, achievement and community involvement under the age of 40”. In 2007, Dr. Cohen was named Young Professional of Québec by the Jeune Chambre de Commerce de Montreal at its 30th edition of the Arista competition, which aims to recognize the success of young people (executives, entrepreneurs, professionals and self employed workers) in Québec.

Dr. Mounir Bashour

Education Background

Dr. Mounir Bashour, a biomedical engineering graduate of Johns Hopkins University, completed his medical degree at McGill University in Montreal. He then specialized in ophthalmology at George Washington University in Washington D.C., after working for a year as an intern at New York Medical College in Manhattan.
Dr. Bashour is one of the world’s few ophthalmologists to have completed three post-doctoral fellowships: pediatric ophthalmology; refractive surgery (both from McGill University); and, the prestigious American Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery fellowship in oculoplastics, at the University of Toronto. Dr. Bashour also completed the Royal College Clinician Investigator Program, a certificate of teaching in the biomedical sciences, and a doctorate in biomedical engineering and medical science, at the University of Toronto.

Refractive Experience

Dr. Bashour has been performing laser surgery since 1994 and has extensive experience with several types of lasers and microkeratomes. He has completed more than 45,000 LASIK procedures and has also performed thousands of advanced custom wavefront procedures. Dr. Bashour has worked in several laser centers in Canada, including Montreal, Toronto, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, and Windsor. He was amongst the first ophthalmologists to perform laser refractive procedures in the USA.
Dr. Bashour taught and performed surgery at the teaching hospital of the University of Sherbrooke, where he was ophthalmology clinical assistant professor, director of ophthalmic, plastic and reconstructive surgery, and the director of pediatric ophthalmology. He was also an assistant professor of ophthalmology at McGill University.

Dr. Bashour received the NSERC (Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada) PGS Scholarship in 1998. He is an accomplished researcher and speaker and has won several awards for his work including ‘Best Scientific Paper’ for work on the corneal epithelium in LASIK surgery at the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery in 2001. He is the editor of the ‘Wired Ophthalmologist’ section in the Techniques in Ophthalmology journal.

Dr. Paul Sanghera

Educational Background

Dr. Paul Sanghera obtained his bachelor's and medical degrees from the University of Alberta, where he was on the dean's list. He then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Toronto, where he would later go on to teach medical students and lecture at the Department of Ophthalmology and Vision Sciences.

Refractive Experience

Upon completing his residency, Dr. Sanghera received surgical training with some of the world's most renowned surgeons. He has performed over 5,000 ocular procedures to date, and is committed to using the latest technologies and techniques in cataract and refractive surgery.
In addition to his work at LASIK MD, Dr. Sanghera is on staff at Mount Sinai Hospital and the Kensington Eye Institute, both located in Toronto, Ontario. He also serves as the co-chairman of the International Ophthalmology Program at the University of Toronto.

Awards/Achievements

Dr. Sanghera is the recipient of numerous awards and scholarships, including the Opal Hess Memorial Scholarship and the Dr. AJ Pauly Bursary in Medicine, in addition to being cited as the highest ranked applicant to enter the MD Program in 2001.
His extensive ophthalmological research is highlighted by the multiple grants he's received over the years, including a $10,000 grant from the Glaucoma Research Society of Canada. Dr. Sanghera's work has also been cited in the Canadian Journal of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Rookaya Mather

Educational Background
Dr. Rookaya Mather received her medical degree from the Royal College of Surgeons in Dublin, Ireland. She completed her specialization in ophthalmology at the University of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, serving as chief resident and receiving the Jay G. Linn Award for Outstanding Resident in her senior year. Dr. Mather went on to complete her fellowship training in Corneal and External Disease at the Proctor Foundation, University of California, San Francisco. She is a diplomat of the American Board of Ophthalmology.

Refractive Experience
Dr. Mather completed training in refractive surgery at LASIK MD with some of the most experienced surgeons in North America. She has performed over 5,000 ocular procedures, and uses the most advanced excimer lasers in the field. Dr. Mather has extensive experience performing cataract surgery, PKP and DSEK surgery as well as pterygium surgery and surface reconstruction.
In addition to performing refractive surgery at LASIK MD, Dr. Mather is an associate professor of ophthalmology at the University of Western Ontario. She spends time at the university teaching residents and medical students and is involved in research in the Department of Ophthalmology. Dr. Mather also sees patients at the Ivey Eye Institute at St. Josephs's Hospital in London, Ontario.
